Magnified: Dr. Charles Gerfen’s Mouse Thalamus

Dr. Charles Gerfen is studying the mouse thalamus with the MBF Virtual Slice extension module for Neurolucida and Stereo Investigator. Virtual Slice is a powerful tool that enables scientists to create, view, and analyze an entire specimen in a single high-resolution image. By using optical sectioning with the Zeiss ApoTome, his images are remarkably clear and bright. Here is what the National Institute of Mental Health scientist has to say about this stunning specimen.

The image is through the thalamus from a transgenic mouse in which Cre recombinase is directed to specific neurons. Cre recombinase expression is in red Parvalbumin, a marker of a particular type of GABA inhibitory neuron is in green and the blue is a fluorescent nissl counterstain called neurotrace blue. The image was taken with a 10x objective using the apotome scope (5 levels and a maximum projection).
