Stereology: Gold Standard for Quantitative Histology

Stereology is a rigorous, statistically sound method for performing unbiased, accurate, reproducible data from tissue specimens. It enables researchers to quantify number, length, area, and volume of objects within defined regions of interest, which is critical for understanding structural changes in development, disease, and experimental models.

By applying systematic random sampling and well-established counting rules, stereology offers a level of accuracy and reproducibility unmatched by ad hoc analysis methods. It’s routinely used to validate experimental hypotheses and answer key biological questions, such as whether a cell population has changed, if neural or vascular structures have altered in length, or how injury has impacted tissue volume.
