Neurolucida®Custom System

Each system we configure is customized to the needs of your lab or facility. Our proven 3-step protocol ensures that you get a reliable system for your research.

  • Step 1. Free initial consultation with our experts to learn about your research needs
  • Step 2. We develop a system plan and work with you to refine it. A typical microscope system includes a computer, microscope components such as a motorized stage, scientific grade camera, illumination device and specific objective lenses, and analysis software.
  • Step 3. We come to your lab to install the system and teach you how to use it.

An eight-channel fluorescence whole slide imaging and analysis system controlled by Neurolucida and built with a Zeiss AxioImager microscope with an ApoTome.  Biolucida and BrainMaker are used here for additional analysis power.

Our support doesn't end once your system is up and running. You can contact our technical support team with any question about your system, whether it's about the software or hardware.

A system for neuron tracing configured on a Zeiss microscope

Most of our systems are configured with brightfield or fluorescence microscopes, but we will work with just about any research grade microscope to help you collect the data you need for your research.

Recently Dr. Paul Manger at the University of Witwatersrand South Africa asked us to build a highly specialized system for imaging and analyzing large mammalian brain specimens such as elephant and hippopotamus. To accommodate these large tissue specimens, we used a Zeiss Axio Imager Vario microscope which is predominately used in the semiconductor industry for inspecting silicon wafers. The motorized stage we commissioned from Ludl Electronic Products is enormous - it can hold tissue specimens with dimensions of up to 30cm x 40cm. This custom hardware, combined with Neurolucida, Stereo Investigator, and Biolucida software, allows Dr. Manger to capture 2D and 3D whole slide images of large tissue specimens, quantitatively analyze the specimens, and share the images with other scientists in a repository of African vertebrate brains. This scale of imaging and analysis of large brains is not currently done in any other laboratory in the world.

Dr. Paul Manger and his lab at the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa use this custom designed system to image and analyze large mammalian brain specimens. This system is the first of its kind.

The system, nicknamed "The Beast," is exceeding their expectations. The lab imaged 240 tissue sections in four days with the system. This involved pre-focusing and background correcting for four different immuno stains. They imaged 60 tissue sections with each stain type at 20x magnification.

Your own system will be custom designed and built for your specific research so you get the quantitative data that you need.

Systems Can Be Built For

  • Collecting reliable quantitative data directly from tissue specimens or from acquired images (neuron tracing for analyzing neuronal morphology and brain mapping; stereology for analyzing the number, size, shape of cells, structures, or regions)
  • Image acquisition (whole slide images, Z-stacks, 3D whole slide images, 2D images)
  • Image management and image sharing in your lab or worldwide over the internet (view and organize large image data, and easily share images with colleagues or in publications)
