View, Manage, and Publish Large Image Data
Biolucida is a hub for your 2D and 3D image data. It allows you to store all of your 2D and 3D image data and metadata in a secure, permanent location accessible via the web. Images can be acquired with slide scanners or microscope systems, and they can be any size - Biolucida is built to handle large image data. The possibilities are endless with Biolucida: share images with collaborators, include large image sets in published papers, start, or contribute to, a public image data repository, analyze images on any computer with Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator, and more. You will always have control over your images and who can access them.

Big Image Storage: Solved
Biolucida is a long-term solution for storing your big image data. It can handle many different types of image data, such as confocal image stacks
(z-stacks), image montages, 2D or 3D virtual slides - no matter how large the file sizes. It can be set up in your lab-on existing IT equipment or new equipment -or you can let us host your images.
Share with Select Colleagues, or with the Public
Do you want to share a few images with a collaborator? No problem. Want to publish an entire image data set along with your paper? You can do that too. You can also start a publicly accessible image data repository like the GENSAT project with Biolucida. The possibilities are endless and you always have control over your images.
Images stored with Biolucida can be opened and analyzed with Neurolucida for neuron reconstruction and analysis or Stereo Investigator for stereology. You can put Neurolucida Desktop or Stereo Investigator Desktop on your laptop to analyze images anywhere - home, the library, a coffee shop, etc. And if a collaborator has Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator, he or she can analyze an image data set that you share through Biolucida.
Biolucida in Action
Biolucida Viewer is a free application for viewing images. If you do not own Biolucida, you can use the Biolucida Viewer to view images that are available to the public or images shared with you by collaborators who own Biolucida. Biolucida Viewer is limited to viewing privileges only. Here are some image data sets available via the Biolucida Viewer.
The GENSAT Project - An open access database of gene expression maps of the mouse nervous system.
An entire image data set of 2D virtual slides showing retinal projections in the Nile grass rat. The image data is part of a published paper in the Journal of Comparative Neurology.
An image data set showing the expression of 16 genes at 8 developmental stages in the avian brain. The image data is part of a published paper in the Journal of Comparative Neurology.
