Stereology – Where to Begin?
Here are just a few starting points to help you develop a deeper understanding of unbiased stereology.
What is Stereology?
Stereology.info A comprehensive informational website about the use of stereology in biological research.
Stereology Informatica An informational site about the origins of stereology, upcoming courses, and more.
An Introduction to Stereology A website from the University of Liverpool.
International Stereology Society A professional society dedicated to the study and use of stereology.
Stereology Courses
MBF Bioscience supports and recommends the following Stereology Courses
Dr. Dan Petersen – NeuroRenew
Dr. Mark West – NeuroStereology.info
Neuron Morphology
Database of Neurons
Duke / Southampton Archive of Neuronal Morphology A site facilitating the free exchange of data between groups studying neuronal morphology. Home of cvapp, a morphology viewer/editor written in java for converting between file formats and headers in order to validate contributed cells.
Simulation
NEURON is a simulation environment for developing and exercising models of neurons and networks of neurons. It is particularly well suited to problems where cable properties of cells play an important role (possibly including extra-cellular potential close to the membrane), and where cell membrane properties are complex, involving many ion-specific channels, ion accumulation, and second messengers.
MBF Bioscience is proud to be a corporate sponsor of the International Society for Stereology (ISS).
3rd Party Software
Microsoft – GDI Plus
If you are using Windows 2000 (earlier than XP), you will need to install GDI Plus when you upgrade to either Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator 7.5 or later. You should download and install the file. Click here to download GDI Plus The file gdiplus.dll should be copied into you Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator programs directory. If you need help or are unsure of how to do this, please contact our support group
Foresight
If your system includes a Foresight IDEA I-Color or I-RGB video capture device and you are running Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator version 6 you will need to have a recent version of the Foresight drivers installed on your system.
To see if you have a Foresight image capture device, please choose Options, Video Setup…in either Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator. If the ‘Foresight I-Color and I-RGB’ option is selected, then we recommend that you update your drivers.
To download the latest drivers, please download the IDEA software version 2.4. Only download these drivers if you are upgrading or have upgraded to Neurolucida or Stereo Investigator version 6 & above.
If you are using any version earlier than version 6, please contact our support team.
All updated and related drivers are available from the Foresight Imaging downloads page, a source for the most up-to-date drivers for the I-Color frame grabber.

NeuronLand
Neuroland makes freely available software to convert between various neuron morphology formats, such as Neurolucida .ASC, SWC, etc. You can find the website here.
SnagIt and Camtasia from TechSmith
Both of these products can be used to capture video from your screen, and save to a variety of formats. SnagIt is a very good screen capture utility that we use here at MBF. Very useful to make presentations with Neurolucida Explorer. The Solids Module (an add-on module to Neurolucida and Stereo Investigator) already provides the ability to capture and save AVI and VRM animations. Camtasia, also from TechSmith can be used to created interactive demos of software – combining the video capture features of SnagIt with movie editing features similar to iMovie on the Mac. Visit TechSmith for more information.
Eutectics NTS
File Converter from Eutectics NTS program is now available for Neurolucida users. Please contact us for details: info@mbfbioscience.com
